2018 has been a rough year for Kanye West. In April Kanye announced that many artist from the GOOD Music label were dropping 7 track albums like Pusha T, Nas, Kid Cudi and Teyana Taylor. Kanye West spoke out on twitter to announce that he would be executive producing every 7 track album releasing from GOOD Music this summer. Ye was released on June 1st, 2018. This is the second album Kanye has released from the GOOD Music camp this year, the first being Pusha T DAYTONA. After listening to DAYONA I was highly impressed with Kanye’s work, so I was excited to see what he had to bring to his own album. Honestly speaking it shows growth from The Life Of Pablo, but there are still small problems that should be fixed.
The first album starts off with an interesting message on the track I Thought About Killing You. It starts off with Kanye discussing his bipolar illness, and how he things about murdering someone, but stresses that he loves them. The twist in the first half of this track is that Kanye states that he loves himself, and has no problem taking his own life so he wouldn’t mind taking someone else’s either. The track starts off on such a powerful message then goes down hill with unsystematic lyrics. Thankfully the album does not go through just lifeless lyrics from time to time. The second track is a huge step up from the first track which is titled Yikes. Yikes is the uplifting track with heavy drums, and unique horns in the background. Kanye discuses events dealing with TMZ, and really confronting a lot of doubters he has been facing from the past several months since being more open to the public again.
Listening to this album I feel a huge step from his last project The Life Of Pablo, which was a great project, but for most tracks in some way felt like reaching outside of Kanye’s Element. This project reminds me of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, in ways of the music necessarily not the lyrics. Tracks like Wouldn’t Leave, No Mistakes, and Ghost Town constructs amazing samples, and vocal performances from Kid Cudi, Charlie Wilson, Ty Dolla Sign, and many more who put in the best contributions on this project.
My honest opinion is Kanye would have delivered 5 more tracks on this album this would have been an amazing project. I enjoyed almost every track but the problem with this project is its only 24 minutes long. Besides that I could say this album is in the same field as My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Sonically.
This album deserves a solid 8/10 because of a amazing body of work. Production was incredible, every person that contributed with vocals did an phenomenal job, and this is the Kanye West almost every fan has been wanting for many years. Listening to ye, I am very excited to see what more GOOD Music has to offer in the future.
